This project traces back to early memories of hot summers days spent on Guernsey’s coast.
Foam samples and early design drawings were crucial in the development of the form. Many iterations were made to convey the story.
Seeds and lentils were painted onto the plaster moulds. These materials became embedded in the clay, eventually burning away in the kiln leaving an eroded apperance.
The master used to create the two part mould, was made from a carved block of sanblasted wood. Using real wood is great for providing the natural wood-grain texture.
Using white stoneware slip is a perfect canvas for the alternative firing methods, such as raku and smoke firing.
Smoke firing the ceramics creates uniquely weathered surface effects. Natural materials such as seaweed, sawdust and pine needles are effective in producing these unpredictable effects.
